Cancer Research UK - Race for Life

Stamford

We once again assisted Cancer Research at their Race for Life weekend in the stunning grounds of Burghley House. The terrain was such that parts of the course were only accessible by 4x4s.  This gave us a further chance to use our new radios.  They showed their flexibility in being able to switch from Sarcomm channel to Business channels when we hit the areas of poor reception and again demonstrated what a good purchase they have been.
Friday was set up day when 4 vehicles and 5 responders attended to work with the CRUK team to set up the Get Muddy course.

After camping overnight at a local site, Saturday saw 12 responders in 9 vehicles assist with final course assessment, transport of volunteers, marshalling and taking up the role of lead vehicle for the event.  Following completion of the race the course was reset for the 5K and 10K on the Sunday.  Our responders helped keep the participants safe whilst giving them the encouragement to get through – getting pretty muddy and wet in some cases – the participants and the responders!

Sunday saw 8 responders in 6 4x4s complete final set up, including taping off a badger set in the middle of the course before leading and sweeping both 5K and 10K, marshalling, transporting volunteers and taking down the whole course.
Unfortunately, one of our responders became unwell towards the end of the event.  The comradeship of the group shone through and the support that each responder gives to colleagues was clear to see.  We are so pleased to see Roger improving and we wish him a speedy recovery.

We have now been assisting at Race for Life events for 12 months and we continue to be inspired by the CRUK team, the participants and even more so, by each other.  Our next Race for Life – Clumber Park 1st/2nd July.
